Until we can get the hardware manufacturers to see Linux as a market this will remain the case. So the more people who try, and use Linux, the more market share the hardware manufacturers see as being lost to someone else, more they will support Linux with their hardware. Let the manufacturers know when they don't give decent support. Get on their case. [EDIT:] Now that AMD/ATI have released the specifications for all of their Video cards, the High end Video card support for Linux is really good. nVidia have still not released ant specifications for their hardware, but their support has improved to the oint where It is possible to run almost any high end nVidia card on Linux. The only single thing that is preventing me from dumping my Microsoft OS right now is the gaming issue. The two major things that I really use my computer for is online research and video games, and being a fairly hard core gamer I like to be able to run the latest and greatest of the games that come out onto the market. Unfortunately, Linux cross over programs simply cannot run the higher end games for Windows platforms, and without that ability I'm stuck with Microsoft for the foreseeable future. I have been playing with the distro's that Torch received, and while I do like a couple of them I just can't see running a dual boot system, using Windows for games, and Linux for everything else. It seems too stop gap to me, if I were to move away from Windows, I just want to get it gone. Posts: 1348 (03/17/07 2:41 PM) Linux Priestess Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	You are correct Games written for Windows, which is the majority of the commercial games, do not run well on Linux, at the moment, WINE is still incomplete - it's in Beta currently 0.9.30, and has a lot of work to be done to on the DirectX dll to get it to work the same as Microsoft's DirectX dll. A lot of Linux users who are Gamers use a dual boot set up, so they can make best use of both operating systems, Windows for games and Linux for everything else.

A lot of gamers actually write for OpenGL rather than DirectX, and as OpenGL runs native on Linux, it's not that big a Job porting to Linux, in a lot of cases just a simple recompile.

I am a huge, (Both is size lol and in Fanboy-isum ok that not a work I know...) Hardcore Gamer. I likes my games... But I've been called a Thief by Microsoft and I still have the receipt that proves my copy of Windows XP is legit. So I have a code that will only give me a moth and lock me out in a month if I don't try and activate XP. If I do activate, that is much sooner and I'll have to reinstall. Again. I've been loyal, and I've been true, and I've never shared my CD-keys or pirated. Rather then give them what they want, more money for a fresh new KEY code that I shouldn't need. I'm moving to Linux Country. that wont ask me for any of that, and provides me a great deal more for a whole lot less cash. But to do this I must Sacrifice about 25% of the games I own and love, for now. and to that I say... "So be it!..." I'll get me a Playstation3 if I want some of the latest games. And I'll write my own...
