Is America about to take a long step toward national identification? That’s the question raised by this year’s renewed delay of implementation for the REAL ID Act, a 2005 law that creates national standards for acceptable identification at federal checkpoints, including airports.
Although originally scheduled to take effect on January 1 of this year the Department of Homeland Security has pushed back implementation of this law, to the relief of many travelers who would otherwise have discovered these new requirements while trying to fly home from New Year’s parties.
Only 22 states produce IDs that meets the law’s new standards. Under the pushed back deadline, the rest have until January 22, 2018 either to obtain another extension or make their licenses compliant. By October, 2020 the TSA will stop accepting noncompliant driver’s licenses to board planes. ...
