*stumped*
Ok, someone enlighten me.
This claim made me curious, so I did a little digging around.
This is the second time I've seen a claim that under close examination doesn't hold water, in this case, that Mexican cartels are a greater threat to the U.S. than terrorist groups such as the Islamic State.
Yes, it's a serious problem, and one that definitely needs to be address with more vigor than it apparently is at the current moment, but the Cartels are hardly the threat to the U.S. as a group who, as one of it's claimed purposes, is the destruction of the U.S.
A group who will carry out random attacks on U.S. citizens, interests and if at all possible, U.S. soil in a random fashion with the sole purpose of killing as many people as possible.
The cartels on the other hand are running a business, and to them the U.S. is a great big market, one in which they want a larger share. Good business men don't go about leveling the neighborhood's of their source of income. They want to sell more drugs, hookers, and what ever else they can to make lots and lots of cash.
They will do what ever they have to in order to protect their business, including torture and murder of those who threaten that business.
The Islamic State on the other hand, has no vested business interests in the U.S. that I'm aware of, and are perfectly happy to blow up, burn down, and smash anything American they can reach.
With that said however, I will agree totally that the threat to the U.S. from terror groups is overstated, both by our media and by our politicians, I hardly wander around in a state of near panic wondering when an Islamic State member will drop a 747 on my head, while remaining cognizant of the fact that given the opportunity to do so,  they would delightfully slice and dice me for my horrific offense of being a U.S. citizen.
On the same token however, I'm also suffering from a profound lack of fear that a Mexican cartel member will randomly decide to point a modified Bushmaster at me and permanently clear up any lingering sinus trouble I might have.
I not only live in a border state, but I'm also frequently making deliveries in those border towns where cartel violence is at it's most extreme. I'm a little more alert while there, but I'm also reasonably comfortable with the knowledge that I've not done anything to piss them off.
So I'm still baffled at this claim that I should be more afraid of a Mexican cartel member than I should be of stumbling across one of the holy warriors of the Islamic State.
Perhaps I'm being a little dense, and if someone would like to take a try at enlightening me, I'll make a concerted effort to see the point.
