Yes, one of the most popular Series in the US was the Love Hina series created by the author of Gundam Wing. The other most popular was Chobits, and it's emphasis on the "unrequited love" and "unobtainable" aspect, to love the Chi would be to kill her.

There is a hell of a lot of the Anime' devoted to some really heavy topics. Not least of which is the 'Boy/Girl' character who either starts out one then gets 'switched' permanently, or is forced to change at awkward times." Rama 1/2" is really hilarious at times, "Fruits Basket" was strange, Kashimashi (boy meets girl) is really much deeper than it looks at first and it seriously looks at "young love" from both sides. The one movie that really did it for the cross over was "Ghost in the Shell". I actually have the Major Motoko Doll from GintS2 from the day; Bought it at Fry's Electronics in the day, when they were a power house.

Molly say:
So keep fightin' for freedom and justice, beloveds, but don't you forget to have fun doin' it. Lord, let your laughter ring forth. Be outrageous, ridicule the fraidy-cats, rejoice in all the oddities that freedom can produce. And when you get through kickin' ass and celebratin' the sheer joy of a good fight, be sure to tell those who come after how much fun it was.
