I hope that new varieties are tested for safety and nutrition, BEFORE they're released to the public.
Everybody hopes that's the case, but for-profit companies have a history of getting while the getting's good and retaining platoons of lawyers to get them off the hook when/if the excrement hits the air circulation device.

IMO where there's the potential of a great deal of money, ethics tend to get pushed aside. Corporations (the new "people" in town) generally don't have many anyway, so it's easier for them.
