But seriously, how could the bad guys really know how well the research is going, or if it's ongoing at all?

In answer;

"Using information which could only have been obtained by monitoring digital cell phones and e-mail, the assailants portrayed to the victim that they had total control over his personal life, and was told to remain silent and to not talk to government authorities."
...
At the time of the assault, Rasmussen had been in discussion with several pre-screened, suitable investors, who were waiting on Rasmussen's team to fix a final detail before attending a live demonstration.
...
"Enormous amounts of personal information thrown in our face behind the guns proved to me NONE of the prospective investors had anything to do with the violence we experienced. These thugs knew things I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW. Their boss has digital cell phone tapping technology at the very least. Other details were probably obtained by wire tapping neighbors and friend's phones too."

They could just say that no research was going on but when your adversary has such surveillance capacity, they couldn't keep it quiet for long. But why should they have to keep it quiet?

Why do the Ominous Bad Guys always wear black suits and drive huge black cars? I'd think they would want to stay off the radar by wearing suburban casual and driving SUVs.

There are a number of theories about that, Mac

  • The idea of "Men in Black" freaks people out and would certainly have more impact on the person than a couple of guys in jeans, t-shirt and sneakers pulling you over.
  • People are more likely to stop if a person looks "official", I would think.
  • It makes it all seem so unbelievable to anyone who hears the account - they will, inevitably be looked upon as nut-cases or cranks.
  • The MiBs are not there to exact punishment or carry out any action - they are the "warning".
  • If "further action" was to be carried out, it would most likely be carried out by people who 'blend in' to the point of invisibility.

It is quite likely that a lot of MiB reports are fantasies but why would respected research engineers make up such stories for the sake of five minutes of fame and ruin their credibility? It just doesn't add up because it's not supposed to. Make the person look incompotent and you can dismiss them in the public eye. In the above account, people may have been more likely to believe it had the ubiquitous MiBs not been mentioned, so if they were interested in starting a conspiracy theory and it never happened, they would have been well-advised to leave that bit out.
