The question of whether it is a viable alternative pales into insignificance when people are harrassed and threatened for researching it. The scientific community laughed at the idea of electricity and scathed Nicola Tesla for his "mas scientist" ideas of radio, alternating current (which was stolen by Edison) and said that wireless power transmission was impossible. Yet all of those things have become not only possible but viable. The reason they were so scathing toward Tesla was not because they thought he was mad, it was because he envisaged free electricity for all.

Once research is confounded by threats of violence, we know there is something terribly wrong. Reseach has always (and probably always will) take a back seat to profits. I'm not suggesting that companies shouldn't make a profit, but when it comes to the future of the planet and our human way of life, perhaps they should, at least, allow and encourage research into more eco-friendly fuel sources.
