Personally, I am neutral on this. I do, though, think that oil discovery has peaked and that what we are using up now are breaking into reserves and will not be sustainable. Some estimates say that there may only be another 10 or, at most, 30 years of oil left, given the tremendous increase in oil consumption. Recent oil discoveries are in more and more inaccessible places and American oil is on it's last legs. That is believed to be one of the reasons that Russia planted their flag on the ocean floor in the Arctic Circle - so they could claim the rights to any oil that is discovered there.

It is, in my opinion, important to look for other more sustainable sources of energy. What that energy may be, I don't know but I think we should be looking at all alternatives and weighing up the cost to us against the cost to the planet.

Accidents happen, that's for sure, and, as Druid points out, in the current war-waging climate enemy attacks would have to be a consideration in building new nuclear plants. Although I think that an enemy capable of bombing a power plant on American home soil would probably possess the technology to make nuclear weapons. I think a more real danger would be sabotage.

Perhaps we will discover other ways of generating energy and nuclear power may not be needed. There is enough energy all around us to sustain us - we need to find out how to tap into it.
