Does “faith” really have substance?

No - as long as "faith" is not presented as fact.

We are all free to believe in anything that we want to, but when our "beliefs" are presented to others as a statement of fact, then it does attract scrutiny and is in need of clarification/proof.

Faith should always be stated as such, as should beliefs. Anyone who fails to define their statements as "faith" or "beliefs" should expect to have their statements regarded as implied facts and, as such, should accept that their statements are open to debate.
