Aside from the contradictory nature of those last two sentences, why wouldn't it be religion? Religion has stimulated peole to some extremes of behavior for thousands of years.

And most low-esteem suicides do not try to take out a city block with them when they go. They generally have methods that include clear opening where someone who 'cares for them' can stop them, talk them out of it, say 'you have too much to live for.'

Pretty much the opposite of terrorists. Their loved ones are the ones telling them they need to do it. That God loves them, and will love them more once they get the car bomb to the hotel lobby. That try to avoid official attention until the last second.

I fear that you conflate "depression suicide" with "self-sacrifice for a cause." Or maybe because you interpret your suicide impulses as coming from esteem problems, you think anyone taking their own life, or giving it up, has the same motivations.
