When you study an unkown system, you try to figure out what the system can potentially do for a long time, Then you conclude the the process is the specification for the system. For example you land up on an unknown place and you see a factory. You study what the fctory is capable of doing consistently, like it is producing textile, and then you conclude it is a textile factory. Now it may not be a textile factory, but something else, but if you keep following this process, you may get the truth. You can't really say the factory is purposeless, because you happen to be a life form which doesn't need clothes.
