All such displays belong on private property.

I agree, even though we don't have separation of church and state as part of our (British) constitution. But could there be an argument that if a sign, or anything else that is visible from public property could be classed as offensive to passers by, it should be removed, even if it is located on private property?

If someone was "mooning" passers by from their living room window, surely the police would have power to act. I know that is rather a silly argument, but just wondering. I wouldn't be over chuffed if a church accross the street from me decided to erect an large sign that I had to look at from my window saying "Sinner Repent" or something like that. I would find it offensive to have to look at that out of my window.

There is no excuse for vandalism, but what's good for the goose is good for the gander in these situations. If the church displays their signs all over the place, does that mean it is open season for everyone to? I think there is room for tolerance here (not that they would agree with me, of course).
