I may be being dim here, and I'm sure that someone will point out that, if so, but is there such a thing as an inconclusive proof?

It just seems a strange concept that there is anything other than a conclusive proof. Perhaps you would like to give some examples of conclusive proofs and some inconclusive proofs so that I can compare them and get an idea of what you mean.

Now, conclusive and inconclusive evidence is a different thing...
