I've had more than one out of body experience, seen a ghost, a UFO, and heard Santa on the roof. The one factor common to all of the above was I was either daydreaming or was had just woken up. I don't believe in Santa or ghosts, the OOB was weird but just the thing to liven up a boring german lesson, and the UFO... well, there I personally think the universe is teeming with life, and I would like to see us send a space probe to the nearest planetary systems (about 10 light years). But on the other hand, I had just got out of bed and may have still been half asleep.

The problem with people's experiences is that the brain can play tricks. People have reported alien abductions when they've fallen asleep in a room full of people where the other people know they never went anywhere. The "light at the end of the tunnel" phenomena was tracked down to a certain part of the brain this year. The new brain scans we have easilly show what is happening in the brain. Voices? Well, how can they be real if the same effect can be got by stimulating that part of the brain?

Wake up and smell the coffee.
